More than a hundred bodies of Palestinians were buried in a mass grave at a cemetery in the southern Gazan city of Khan Younis on Wednesday, Nov. 22nd.
Monica De La Cruz is putting TX15 to shame by being pro-Israel in the aftermath of 34,000 dead Palestinians.
Many of these people have been violently displaced, much like the migrants that come to our Southern border as a result of interventionist, imperial American foreign policy. Monica’s rhetoric is not surprising but it is disappointing, as well as hypocritical, considering she tapped into her own immigrant background while running her campaign – a campaign that AIPAC spent $18,296 in. She doesn’t truly respect or empathize when a group of people have to flee for the safety of themselves and their families.
Her staunch support for “Israel” makes her a Zionist, which is a flagrant offense to Judaism as a whole, and we don’t want settler-colonial supporting individuals like Zionists in the RGV. In the weeks following Hamas’ Oct. 7th attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and then Israel’s militaristic, violent retaliation that killed more than 11,000 Palestinians –of whom 5000 were children — we’ve watched in horror as a genocide has unfolded before our eyes. With the exact death toll unclear thanks to a communications-blackout after internet and telephone services collapsed Nov. 17th, many recent reports estimate that there may be as many as 20,000 dead. A historic international peace-movement has erupted calling for an end to the apartheid, an end to the occupation, an end to U.S.-backed imperialism, an end to colonization, and for a permanent ceasefire between both Israel and Hamas. //

Rife with life, Rio Grande Valley residents have also been doing their part in organizing to see a #FreeGaza in their lifetime. Starting with a rally on October 29th that had over 100 people in attendance, to a biking rally/vigil Nov. 5th, to drag show fundraisers organized by Red Star Texas held at The Flying Walrus, to the upcoming charity show on Nov. 24th by hosted by Sick Freak Records & Guilty Pleasure at The Flying Walrus, where local bands will be organizing to boycott the mass consumption of Black Friday. They will be donating all proceeds to Palestine Red Crescent, one of the last humanitarian groups in the region, a group similar to that of The Red Cross. It’s clear that TX-15 constituents are firmly against Israel’s genocidal actions. The movement continues to be active in the region, with a film screening of the documentary, The Wanted 18, in McAllen set for December 2. [1] //

The group hosting the rallies is called Red Star Texas, a mutual aid organization, which has stated that people “expect our representatives, and those who would like to be our representatives, to not only speak up on this issue calling for a ceasefire, [but to] call for an end to the dehumanization of Palestinians [as well].” Red Star Texas’ group has focused their organizing on Republican Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz and her 2024 Democratic opponent Michelle Vallejo to come out in public support of a ceasefire in Gaza. [2]//

Supporting a ceasefire is incredibly popular among Democrats, with 80% voting in favor of de-escalation.[3] Leaders of the Palestinian Youth Liberation movement and many other youth have denounced Biden and his pro-war policies; many will be voting anti-war this coming ballot if possible.[4] With the divide between what younger people want and the behavior of The Old Guard of the Democratic Party growing wider, having people who represent the working-class and NOT corporate, monied interests is more important than ever before. //

Deciding that they could offer the solution of building and wielding power for the poor and working-class who are often “ignored by power-hungry politicians loyal to corporate interests,” local immigration-serving non-profit La Union del Pueblo Entero has launched LUPE Votes this past November 2021, which is a 501(c)4 nonprofit group. 501(c)4 organizations can endorse and run political candidates. Staying hip to the marches and rallies happening in town, La Union del Pueblo Entero (from now on referred to as LUPE) organizers reached out to co-organizations, Red Star Texas and FoodNotBombsRGV for materials and resources to coordinate a virtual teach-in on the topic of Palestine, showing that Lupe Votes’ parent organization, LUPE, is listening to what people in the streets and in the district are saying. Considering that Lupe Votes is running Michelle Vallejo for Congress, a self-proclaimed “Progressive” Democrat who currently takes money from Israeli lobby JStreet, this is a good indication of Vallejo possibly changing her position on the issue. The Spanish virtual teach-in was informative, journalistic, and filled with storytelling that emphasized similarity – “millos y millos de differencas pero cosas mismas.” (millions and millions of differences but the same things) as the moderator Dani Marrero put it. //

LUPE’s organizer, Abraham Diaz Alonso, and Anthony Khair, of Palestinian-descent, begin by stressing the importance of acting in solidarity with others in times of international struggle, and how important it is to be on the right side of history when dealing with historical events like mass killings, killings known as “matanzas”, which was but the first of many historical similarities between Palestine and Mexico discussed by the panelists. These similarities hit close to home, with both border-regions sharing a history of having experienced regional-violence at the hands of their governments.[7][8]//

Anthony Khair began by being honest in his description of what is happening in Gaza. He then proceeded to explain to viewers some of the history of Palestine, about how Israel has been “bullying” Palestine for 70 years. //

The presentation began with going back to the year 1917, when Israel’s statehood was first acknowledged by Britain, then the 1948 Nakba, which was a mass killing and displacement event, then the growth of the occupation over the years, and a definition of Zionism/Sionismo. //

The livestream goes back to Abraham, who clears up 2 myths: the myths that 1) the occupation of Palestine is a “conflict” and 2) that all Palestinians are Hamas. Other similarities our regions share is the problem with geographic borders and how both borders had history of being more than one territory. The idea of moving border lines and shrinkage of land is held in common, with the each regions respective local population “robbed of their land.” Abraham is alluding to the Texas-Louisiana purchase and the fact that Texas has been 5 different territories/countries. Summing it up, “Israel is a bully” he says. //

Another of the struggles shared by both Palestine and the Rio Grande Valley is that governments from both Israel and The United States engage in detentions [9], have shortened and limited access to roadways, racial-profiling is common, and that much like many Latinoamericanos, Palestinians have also been uprooted for 70 years. The common thread is that because the United States is imperial, is it “allowed” to do such a thing, such a thing as “sending military aid and technology aid to Israel, for them to buy bombs” for 70 years. //

Abraham goes on about other similarities shared between Palestine and the Rio Grande Valley is the use of Israeli tech used to monitor, surveil, and enforce boundaries upon people along the border and the border-walls. Anthony agrees that border-technology is unique and dangerous, enforcing Abraham’s earlier point that, as long as The United States is sending money to Israel, more homes will be demolished and the money will go to the Israel’s army, the Israeli Defense Forces (The IDF). //

The moderator agrees that our regions share many similarities. They ask how can people help during this time of crisis for the Palestinian people, and it is the main question people are asking in the livestream chat comments — “How can we help?” //

Do you think Michelle Vallejo watched her sponsoring organization’s livestream? Does she stand firmly against the dehumanization of all refugees and asylum-seekers? Is she prepared to come out strong against the vitriol, hateful rhetoric of the GOP on this issue during her campaign? Considering the fact that the former 45th president got his idea for the border-wall from Israel’s, it is imperative we know that Michelle is not afraid to speak up for Palestine and to speak out against militarization and its deadly effects, effects like the limiting of migration and policing of the land’s native population, just the way the Rio Grande Valley is policed by Border Patrol and with checkpoints. The MAGA, former-indicted president and his faction, which Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz’s base aligns itself with, has glorified the wall and the militarization that has accompanied it, saying “All you have to do is ask Israel. They were having a total disaster coming across [referring to migrants] and they had a wall. It’s 99.9 percent stoppage.” [10] It’s well known that the border-wall does not deter asylum-seekers, is a waste of money, and causes immense environmental destruction to the Rio Grande Valley’s native habitat and ecology. The Biden administration recently waived dozens of environmental laws to continue building the border-wall. [11] //

What would Mexican-American Civil Rights activist and one of LUPE’s revered figure Dolores Huerta say? //

Hello there! I’m a previous Texas Democratic Party staffer and campaign strategist. I used to work on electoral and grassroots campaigns, mostly in the RGV, for about 5 years until I decided that I needed a career not so rife with ethical conundrum. I am a first-generation Mexican-American and identify as a Chicana. I’m a Rio Grande local from the upper RGV. My ancestors on both sides of my family were farmworkers who worked hard to make sure that I could have the chance to go to college and work for a future that is fulfilling.
I have been trained for 4 years as an anthropologist, and my reporting includes mostly participant-observation; anthropology is a colonial field, and as an anti-racist, I found myself more aligned with the values that the profession of social work offers, especially when it comes to community agency-evaluations, and do not identify myself much as an anthropologist. Lobbies and Pressure groups are distinct feature of the American political system. These are groups of individuals and organizations who play a critical role in shaping and exerting pressure on Washington’s decision-making centers.
The most common kind of lobbies are fossil-fuel lobbies, defense industry lobbies, and Israeli lobbies These are the big money groups that force politicians to pass legislation that benefits them, and not the public.

*Congressman Henry Cuellar of TX28 takes over $800,000 in fossil-fuel lobby money.[ii]
* Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz took $53, 647 from oil and gas lobbies in 2022.[iii]
*Congressman Vicente Gonzalez of TX34 takes $449,712 from oil and gas lobbies,including $65, 514 from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).[iv]

The most powerful and influential lobby in Washington, DC is AIPAC. According to a study released by the congressional research center, US assistance to Israel surpassed 121 billion dollars in December 2016, growing from 3 billion dollars in October 1973.[i]
Israel and the United States have strong ties. The US support has been a crucial factor in Israel’s militarization since its establishment in 1948. Furthermore, it is the primary funding source for the Israeli army, known as the Israeli Defense Force (the IDF). AIPAC is unapologetic in sending military aid since the inception of its illegal occupation of Palestine in 1948. Many politicians take money from AIPAC, but can be pressured to divest. //

JStreet
JStreet is a more recent lobbyist group, that describes itself as a, ““pro-peace, pro-Israel group.” & advocates for a two-state solution. While this lobby is more outspoken against the war crimes and violence of the far-right Israeli administration, they still believe in Israel’s “right to exist” which actively displaces the Indigenous Palestinians who were uprooted from their original land so that settler-colonists could live there.
The JStreet Lobby is still a Zionist lobby, and takes a prominent role during electoral primaries. Progressives have been slightly compromised by this group, as people like Jessica Cisneros and Jamaal Bowman have accepted donations from this group and thus have had their speech censored on standing with Palestine/being critical of Israel.1 //

Israel, the IDF, and American policing
For 27 years, police departments in Georgia have received grants from the U.S. Department of Justice that subsidize trainings abroad in Israel. Since the program’s inception in 1992, it has trained at least 1,700 participants, including officers from the Atlanta Police Department. 2
Law enforcement from other U.S. states have participated in the program, including those from Tennessee, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Floria, Georgia, Indiana, North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia. If you noticed, Texas is among these states, and while we have not seen similar projects proposed like that of Atlanta’s failed training facility, we still have a very high PD budget to defund, and Jorge Gonzalez still needs justice. //

Investing in accessible mental health resources and mental health professionals, NOT COPS
Investing in infrastructure to welcome refugees and migrants into America, especially from Central America
Instead, politiqos are funding instability abroad, which is an intimate issue for people in the valley, considering how relevant dehumanization of “the other” is when it comes to our US-MX border is.
We share a similar struggle with Palestinians.

So what can we do?
We must take initiative upon ourselves to act as people of conscience and not wait for politicians to save us. We must apply pressure, whether that is as an individual or as a group, to the politicians that take these lobby groups money.
We must be steadfast in our ethics to not work with Zionists or let them infiltrate our communities without any accountability (such as demanding divestment).
We can demand things of our local leaders that are the opposite of militaristic action and defense spending, such as demanding that our cities become Sanctuary Cities and that we tear down the wall, not continue to build it.
Many of our struggles with Palestine are the same, from IDF-tactics used in policing, to being separated by a wall in our homeland and split in two, to being denied equal citizenship when it comes to residents and non-citizens.
Be outspoken. Find like-minded people. Do not be afraid to cause good trouble.

Entonces, ¿qué podemos hacer?

The Rio Grande Valley is a region without any Democratic National Committee buildings, Democratic Party community centers, or headquarters. For some, this would rightfully be considered as a direct abandonment of the Latino vote, a taking-of-our-vote-for-granted-ness. Without a common space for Democrats to gather and build community and power, we find that those of us who identify as Democrat or on the left can be left feeling without a political home. It is said that change comes from the bottom-up, and right now that bottom-up model is lacking the investment in lower/South Texas that we need so that we can run successful, winning candidates, and secure the trust of voters.

“builds stronger, healthier communities where colonia residents use the power of civic engagement for social change. From fighting deportations, to providing social services and English classes, to organizing for streetlights and drainage, LUPE responds to the needs of the community” whose, “strength derives from our 8,000+ members”[3]
decide to start a C4 voting arm, Lupe Votes, there seemed promise that something home-grown and long-lasting may form in the region.[4]

However, heartbreakingly enough, this turned out not be the case. When Lupe Votes decided to hold a self-created “nomination process” to impose on TX-15’s Democratic fair and free elections, not only did they refuse to allow their 8,0000+ members vote on the candidate chosen, but they also did not allow any voting on the policy to be championed, as one close volunteer confided in me.[5] It was nothing but a handful of individuals from the board of trustees who chose the nominee, and since the cycle has passed, what we witnessed was a lot of pageantry and celebrity-posturing, but not enough bold policy stances for the border. //

When an immigration-serving nonprofit has the power to run a candidate, it would seem like a winning ticket to have that candidate loudly and proudly declare the humanity of all migrants, to decry the treatment of refugee and asylum seekers at the border, to champion sanctuary cities, to engage on social media in Spanish, not be afraid to champion legalizing cannabis so as to cut teeth from cartel politics, and to not be afraid to push back against the hateful rhetoric of the GOP. Bold candidates with bold stances are what win elections, not moderate attitudes that cater more to the oppressor than the oppressed.

Michelle Vallejo needs to actually represent the constituents of TX-15, not the white-middle class donors she’s trying to appease by not being bold on border policy. Bernie Sanders won the district with his highly progressive, common-sense ideas, and TX15 had historically polled highly Democratic[6]. On the issue of the illegal occupation of Palestine, 80% of Democrats support a ceasefire.1 In the meantime, the RNC is opening up community centers in the Rio Grande Valley[7], so we must be bolder, more demanding, and unceasing in our fight to protect and keep our border communities humanized, and to continuously enrich our communities. //

We will watch as to whether Michelle Vallejo takes into account what her constituents are demanding of her, especially as the constituency becomes loud and vocal in the movement to denounce apartheid and the dehumanization of Palestinians; she must be loud in humanizing residents & asylum seekers, not afraid to user her platform to get involved in state-level advocacy within the Texas Lege to fight anti-immigration bills like HB4 and SB4 that recently passed, fearlessly champion Citizenship for All against the GOP, and divest from JStreet. //

Further, as a Congresswoman-hopeful, it is imperative that Michelle fight for the equality of all people in the Rio Grande Valley. With an immigration-serving nonprofit sponsoring her run, making the dismantlement of the border wall is a key issue, as should speaking up for and fighting for a just immigration system that does not require the juvenile detention centers proliferate among the valley. //

There are settler-colonists moving to the Rio Grande Valley in record numbers, in some part thanks to Elon Musk and SpaceX[10], which drives up the housing market and leaves locals and residents with skyrocketing housing prices, being pushed out of their homes. We have intergenerational families of poverty whose children won’t be able to afford a home in their own region thanks to settler-colonists – not to mention the influx of Winter Texans that our tourist economy caters to. //
