In the weeks following Hamas’ Oct. 7th attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and then Israel’s militaristic, violent retaliation that killed more than 11,000 Palestinians –of whom 5000 were children — we’ve watched in horror as a genocide has unfolded before our eyes. With the exact death toll unclear thanks to a communications-blackout after internet and telephone services collapsed Nov. 17th, many recent reports estimate that there may be as many as 20,000 dead. A historic international peace-movement has erupted calling for an end to the apartheid, an end to the occupation, an end to U.S.-backed imperialism, an end to colonization, and for a permanent ceasefire between both Israel and Hamas. //
En las semanas posteriores al ataque de Hamas el 7 de octubre contra Israel que mató a 1,200 personas y luega a la represalia militarista y genocida de Israel que mató a mas de 11,000 Palestinos, 5,000 de los cuales eran niños, hemos visto con horror cómo se ha desarrollado un genocidio ante nuestros ojos. Rife with life, Rio Grande Valley residents have also been doing their part in organizing to see a #FreeGaza in their lifetime. Starting with a rally on October 29th that had over 100 people in attendance, to a biking rally/vigil Nov. 5th, to drag show fundraisers organized by Red Star Texas held at The Flying Walrus, to the upcoming charity show on Nov. 24th by hosted by Sick Freak Records & Guilty Pleasure at The Flying Walrus, where local bands will be organizing to boycott the mass consumption of Black Friday. They will be donating all proceeds to Palestine Red Crescent, one of the last humanitarian groups in the region, a group similar to that of The Red Cross. It’s clear that TX-15 constituents are firmly against Israel’s genocidal actions. The movement continues to be active in the region, with a film screening of the documentary, The Wanted 18, in McAllen set for December 2. [1] //
Llenos di vida, los residentes del Rio Grande Valley también han estado haciendo su parte en la movimiento para ver un #FreeGaza en su vida. Comenzando con una manifestación el 29 de Octubre que contó la asistencia da mas de 100 personas, a una manifestación / vigilia en biciclete el 5 de Noviembre, a espectaculos benficios el 24 Noviembre organizados por Sick Freak Records y The Flying Walrus que estan boicoteando el consumo masivo del Black Friday y tambien donando las ganancias a la media Luna Roja Palestina, uno de los ultimos grupos humanitarios en la region y similar al de le Cruz Roja. Esta claro que los personas de TX-15 estan firemente en contra de la acciones genocidas de Israel. [1] //
The group hosting the rallies is called Red Star Texas, a mutual aid organization, which has stated that people “expect our representatives, and those who would like to be our representatives, to not only speak up on this issue calling for a ceasefire, [but to] call for an end to the dehumanization of Palestinians [as well].” Red Star Texas’ group has focused their organizing on Republican Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz and her 2024 Democratic opponent Michelle Vallejo to come out in public support of a ceasefire in Gaza. [2]//
El grupo que organiza las manifestacions se llama Estrella Roja de Texas, ha declarado que la gente “espera que nuestros representantes, y aquellos a los que les gustaria ser nuestros representate no solo hablen sobre este tema pidiendo un alto el al fuego, [sino que] tambien pidan el fin de la deshumanización de los Palestinos. El grupo “ha centrado su organización en la congresista republicana Monica De La Cruz y su opononente democrata en 2024, Michelle Vallejo, para exigir un alto el fuego en Gaza. [2] //
Supporting a ceasefire is incredibly popular among Democrats, with 80% voting in favor of de-escalation.[3] Leaders of the Palestinian Youth Liberation movement and many other youth have denounced Biden and his pro-war policies; many will be voting anti-war this coming ballot if possible.[4] With the divide between what younger people want and the behavior of The Old Guard of the Democratic Party growing wider, having people who represent the working-class and NOT corporate, monied interests is more important than ever before. //
Apoyar un alto el fuego es increiblemente popular entre los democratas, con un 80% votando a favor de la desescalada. [3] Los lideres del movimiento de liberación de la juventud Palestina y muchos otros jóvenes han denuniado a Biden y sus politicias a favor de la guerra; Muchos votaran en contra de la guerra en las próximas eleccions si es posible. Deciding that they could offer the solution of building and wielding power for the poor and working-class who are often “ignored by power-hungry politicians loyal to corporate interests,” local immigration-serving non-profit La Union del Pueblo Entero has launched LUPE Votes this past November 2021, which is a 501(c)4 nonprofit group. 501(c)4 organizations can endorse and run political candidates. [5] //
Decidiendo que podian ofrecer esta solución, para construir y ejercer el poder para la gente comun que a menudo es “ignorada por politics hambirentos de poder leales a los intereses corporativos”, la organización local sin fines de lucro que sirve a la inmigracion La Union del Pueblo Entero lanzó LUPE Votes, un grupo sin fines de lucro 501 (c)4, a través del cual l la organización puede respaldar y postular candidatos politicos, que se lanzara en Noviembre, 2021. Staying hip to the marches and rallies happening in town, La Union del Pueblo Entero (from now on referred to as LUPE) organizers reached out to co-organizations, Red Star Texas and FoodNotBombsRGV for materials and resources to coordinate a virtual teach-in on the topic of Palestine, showing that Lupe Votes’ parent organization, LUPE, is listening to what people in the streets and in the district are saying. Considering that Lupe Votes is running Michelle Vallejo for Congress, a self-proclaimed “Progressive” Democrat who currently takes money from Israeli lobby JStreet, this is a good indication of Vallejo possibly changing her position on the issue. [6] //
Manteniendose al tanto de las marchas y mitines que se llevan a cabo en la ciudad, los organizadores de La Union del Pueblo Entero (de ahora en adelante conocida como LUPE) se acercaron a los co-organizadores de Red Star Texas, FoodNotBombsRGV, para obtener materiales y recursos para organizar una charla virtual sobre Palestina, lo que demuestra que la organización matriz de Lupe Votes, LUPE, esta eschucando lo que dice la gente en las calles y en el distrito. The Spanish virtual teach-in was informative, journalistic, and filled with storytelling that emphasized similarity – “millos y millos de differencas pero cosas mismas.” (millions and millions of differences but the same things) as the moderator Dani Marrero put it. //

LUPE’s organizer, Abraham Diaz Alonso, and Anthony Khair, of Palestinian-descent, begin by stressing the importance of acting in solidarity with others in times of international struggle, and how important it is to be on the right side of history when dealing with historical events like mass killings, killings known as “matanzas”, which was but the first of many historical similarities between Palestine and Mexico discussed by the panelists. These similarities hit close to home, with both border-regions sharing a history of having experienced regional-violence at the hands of their governments.[7][8]//

Anthony Khair began by being honest in his description of what is happening in Gaza. In Spanish, he let viewers know that “children are dying, buildings are being blown up, majority of them are children. When we watch the news, all we can do is cry. This is not sacred ground anymore because of the genocide. That is what’s happening.” //

He then proceeded to explain to viewers some of the history of Palestine, about how Israel has been “bullying” Palestine for 70 years. //

The presentation began with going back to the year 1917, when Israel’s statehood was first acknowledged by Britain, then the 1948 Nakba, which was a mass killing and displacement event, then the growth of the occupation over the years, and a definition of Zionism/Sionismo. //
La presentacion comenzo con una breve historia de 1917, el primer reconocimiento de Israel de la condicion de Estado por parte de Gran Bretana, la Nakba de 1948, un evento de asesinato y desplazamiento masivo, el crecimiento de la ocupacion a lo largo de los anos y una definicion de Sionismo. //
“Look at the land in 2012. Can you imagine what is happening right now in 2023?” He asks. “This is what Zionism does. Zionism is hatred, Zionism is racism.” //

The livestream goes back to Abraham, who clears up 2 myths: the myths that 1) the occupation of Palestine is a “conflict” and 2) that all Palestinians are Hamas. Other similarities our regions share is the problem with geographic borders and how both borders had history of being more than one territory. The idea of moving border lines and shrinkage of land is held in common, with the each regions respective local population “robbed of their land.” Abraham is alluding to the Texas-Louisiana purchase and the fact that Texas has been 5 different territories/countries. Summing it up, “Israel is a bully” he says. //
La transmision en vivo se remonta a Abraham, quien aclara 2 mitos: los mitos de que 1) la ocupación de Palestina es un “conflicto” y 2) todos los Palestinos son Hamas. Another of the struggles shared by both Palestine and the Rio Grande Valley is that governments from both Israel and The United States engage in detentions [9], have shortened and limited access to roadways, racial-profiling is common, and that much like many Latinoamericanos, Palestinians have also been uprooted for 70 years. The common thread is that because the United States is imperial, is it “allowed” to do such a thing, such a thing as “sending military aid and technology aid to Israel, for them to buy bombs” for 70 years. //
Otra de las luchas compartidas tanto por Palestina como por Mexico es que en Estados Unidos el govierno tanto en el Rio Gande Valley como en Mexico realiza detenciones [9], ha acortado y limitado las carreteras, la discriminación racial es comun y que, al igual que muchos latinoamericanos, los Palestinos has sido desarraigados durante 70 anos. Unidos es imperial, se le “permite” haceer tal cosa. algo tan imperial como “enviar ayuda militar y ayudar tecnologica a Israel para que compren bombas” durante 70 anos. //
Abraham goes on about other similarities shared between Palestine and the Rio Grande Valley is the use of Israeli tech used to monitor, surveil, and enforce boundaries upon people along the border and the border-walls. Anthony agrees that border-technology is unique and dangerous, enforcing Abraham’s earlier point that, as long as The United States is sending money to Israel, more homes will be demolished and the money will go to the Israel’s army, the Israeli Defense Forces (The IDF). //
Otra de la similitudes compartidas entre Palestina y Mexico, continua Abraham, es el uso de la tecnologia Israeli oara monitorear, vigilar y hacer cumplir las fronteras sobre las personas en la region fronteriza. Anthony esta de acuerdo en que la tecnologia fronteriza es unica y peligrosa, y refuerza el punto anterior de Abraham de que mientras Estados Unidos envie dinero a Israel, se demoleran mas casas o se destinara a un soldado de la IDF (Defensa Israeli). //
The moderator agrees that our regions share many similarities. They ask how can people help during this time of crisis for the Palestinian people, and it is the main question people are asking in the livestream chat comments — “How can we help?” //
El moderador esta de acuerdo en que nuestras regiones comparten similitudes. Preguntan como puede ayuda la gente durante este tiempo de crisis para el pueblo Palestino, es la pregunta principal que la gente esta comentando en el chat de transmision en vivi,”Como podemos ayudar?” //
Anthony answers, “The best way is to contact your representatives, like Biden, and the rest of government officials. Tell them that a genocide is happening and we don’t want that to happen.” //

Agreeing, Abraham says, “I know that calling my representatives takes like 3 minutes. It takes me longer to walk down the street than to make this phone-call. I know that at first people can be nervous and apprehensive, but it’s the right thing to do. We have a responsibility to stop the Israeli government from committing genocide.” //

The panelists moderator reiterates that the truth is important, very important especially when it is controversial. They go on, “There are many resources right now to educate ourselves. We know when we [have to say] “this isn’t correct.” We know that we should be standing in solidarity with Palestine, as is the rest of the world.” //

Do you think Michelle Vallejo watched her sponsoring organization’s livestream? Does she stand firmly against the dehumanization of all refugees and asylum-seekers? Is she prepared to come out strong against the vitriol, hateful rhetoric of the GOP on this issue during her campaign? Considering the fact that the former 45th president got his idea for the border-wall from Israel’s, it is imperative we know that Michelle is not afraid to speak up for Palestine and to speak out against militarization and its deadly effects, effects like the limiting of migration and policing of the land’s native population, just the way the Rio Grande Valley is policed by Border Patrol and with checkpoints. The MAGA, former-indicted president and his faction, which Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz’s base aligns itself with, has glorified the wall and the militarization that has accompanied it, saying “All you have to do is ask Israel. They were having a total disaster coming across [referring to migrants] and they had a wall. It’s 99.9 percent stoppage.” [10] It’s well known that the border-wall does not deter asylum-seekers, is a waste of money, and causes immense environmental destruction to the Rio Grande Valley’s native habitat and ecology. The Biden administration recently waived dozens of environmental laws to continue building the border-wall. [11] //

Will Michelle come out strong, as the panelists put it, “on the right side of history?” Will she come out in opposition to genocide? Will she come out in support for demilitarization and for Latinoamerica? Will she come out in support of Palestinians and a permanent ceasefire? Will she divest from the Israeli lobby JStreet[12]? What would Mexican-American Civil Rights activist and one of LUPE’s revered figure Dolores Huerta say? //
¿Michelle saldrá fortalecida, como dicen los panelistas, “en el lado correcto de la historia?” ¿Saldrá a apoyar la demilitarizacion y a favor de Latinoamerica? ¿Saldrá a apoyar a los Palestinos y a un alto el fuego permanente? ¿Desinvertira en el lobby Israeli JStreet [12]? ¿Qué diría la activista de derechos civiles mexicanoamericana y una de las figuras veneradas de LUPE, Dolores Huerta?
